The framework

What does S.T.A.R.R. stand for?

Teach Like a S.T.A.R.R. is a practical professional development course designed to help teachers build strong, well-managed, engaging classrooms from day one. Each letter of the framework represents a core pillar of effective teaching.

S

Strong Lessons

Planning instruction that is clear, purposeful, and engaging. When lessons are well-designed, student engagement rises and behavior problems drop — because students are focused on learning.

T

Tight Transitions

Maximizing learning time by reducing downtime and creating smooth classroom routines. The minutes lost to disorganized transitions add up — and teachers who master transitions reclaim significant instructional time every day.

A

Acting Intentionally and Purposefully

Making deliberate instructional and management decisions that support student success. Intentional teachers don't just react — they anticipate, plan, and respond with purpose.

R

Routines and Procedures

Establishing systems that allow classrooms to run efficiently and independently. When students know exactly what to do and when, the teacher is freed up to teach — not manage chaos.

R

Relationships

Building positive teacher-student relationships that create a culture of trust, respect, and accountability. Students work harder for teachers they feel connected to — and relationships are the foundation everything else is built on.

The approach

Practical, grounded, and immediately applicable.

My approach is highly practical and grounded in over 35 years of experience as a teacher, principal, instructional coach, and mentor. Rather than focusing on educational theory alone, I provide teachers with concrete strategies, scripts, examples, and tools they can implement immediately.

Participants leave each session with actionable next steps that can be used in their classrooms the very next day.

The course is especially valuable for new teachers, but veteran teachers often find that it helps them strengthen classroom management, improve student engagement, and refine instructional practices. The goal is simple: help teachers feel confident, effective, and successful while creating classrooms where students can thrive.

The philosophy

Great teaching starts with understanding children.

Teach Like a S.T.A.R.R. is built on the belief that student behavior is communication. When children struggle, act out, withdraw, or resist, they are telling us something about their needs, skills, emotions, or environment. Rather than focusing on punishment, teachers learn to understand what students are communicating and respond in ways that help them succeed.

The STARR framework helps teachers create classrooms where expectations are clear, relationships are strong, and students feel both supported and accountable. Teachers learn how to proactively prevent many behavior and engagement issues through strong lesson design, purposeful routines, effective transitions, and positive relationships.

"When something is not working, I encourage teachers to begin with reflection: What can I adjust? What support might this child need? What am I communicating?"

— Etti Siegel, MSEd

This mindset moves educators away from blame and toward problem-solving. While students are responsible for their choices, teachers have the power to shape the conditions that make success more likely.

Above all, the course emphasizes that children do well when they can, relationships matter, and every student deserves a teacher who believes in their potential. Teachers leave with practical tools, concrete strategies, and a framework for creating classrooms where both students and teachers can thrive.
